Animation and Sports Culture: Exploring the perceived impact of watching stories about women in sports through animated media

MDM Contact

ProjectDescription

The purpose of my MRP is to investigate the adversities women face in the sports industry through an autoethnographic style. I discuss how sports are constructed by men, for men, and reflect on how my personal experiences align with current academic research that exists in this space. Topics discussed are marginalization, representation of women in sport leadership, mediocracy, and self limitation. My findings led me to my content output piece which is an animation project. My animated short film called Maiden Mascot is a demonstration of using animation as a medium/platform to share my experiences as a woman pursuing a career in the sports industry.

Maiden Mascot - Animated Short Film by Chelsea Vern

Film Synopsis:

Maiden Mascot is set in an alternate universe that is populated entirely by mascots and where sports are the core of their existence. The story follows a passionate and driven female mascot named Ronie Raccoon that dreams of becoming the head mascot for her hometown’s professional men’s hockey team. The film focuses on the experience of a woman pursuing a career in the sports industry and the discriminatory hurdles she faces on her journey to the big leagues.

About the Project:

My name is Chelsea Vern and I am pursuing my master’s degree in Digital Media at Ryerson University. The goal of my thesis project is to investigate the adversities women face in the sports industry through an auto-ethnographic style. I discuss how sports are constructed by men, for men, and reflect on how my personal experiences align with current academic research that exists in this space. Topics I discuss are marginalization, representation of women in sport leadership, mediocracy, and self limitation. To combine my research and experience, I wrote and produced an animated short film that explores the narrative of a young woman pursuing a career in sports and the discriminatory hurdles she faces on her journey. I have produced my short film as a recorded-storyboard with an original script, characters, story card artwork, and visual and sound editing. Next steps will be to start the submission process to festivals and/or pitching the storyboard to a studio.
